The next morning, I awoke to absolute calm, peering out my back balcony as the dawn broke. The black curtain of the night sky began to fade and evolve into embers of orange and gold. As the sky illuminated, I bolted upright at what I saw—Mount Kilimanjaro! The clouds the day before had completely obscured it. I dressed in my outdoor gear, pulling on my shorts and boots, so I could sit on my balcony and marvel at her. For a moment, it was just the mountain and me. I reveled in the stillness of the crisp air and freshness of the morning dew, enjoying the last few minutes of solitude before commencing on my odyssey.

“…Lyrical and inspiring...an inspirational remembrance that offers powerful accounts of therapeutic experiences.”
Kirkus Reviews
We could talk about anything from politics to advice at work to my transitioning out of being raised in a conservative religion. Hollie gave me the vocabulary I was needing around a new value system of Humanism (being good for the sake of being good). She became a true friend and indirect mentor.
Outside of work, we stayed in touch over the years. Key memories include volunteering with her at Hot Dogs for the Homeless to training and working with her on a PAVE chapter start-up in Oklahoma City (Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment), a national anti-sexual violence organization). For some reason, the stars align every now and then and bring our paths together, including a chance meeting in London, where we shared midnight stories over Subway sandwiches.
Needless to say, Hollie is the kind of person who walks the walk. She is the kind of friend who will take a taxi at midnight to visit a friend. She truly lives by an honor code, which includes a growth mindset. She is open-minded, compassionate, and an amazing human being. I wish everyone could know her and learn from her life experience.
Since bringing her into 7.8 billion people's lives may be unfathomable, the next best option is to get to know her inspiring life through her upcoming book release.
This might be the most inspiring book I have read this year (currently at 95 completed). Not only is it inspiring, it is engaging and heartwarming. Hollie does a lot of showing how she grew up and dealt with setbacks.
If you are only going to read one book this year, read this one. Buy a few copies for the holidays to give to family and friends.
